Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
