Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments is fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
